But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” — Bible, Galatians 5:22–23

I’ve been sitting with this verse, and one phrase keeps rising to the surface:

“Against such things there is no law.”

Think about that.

When the Spirit of God is truly at work in someone’s life, rules are not what produce the evidence. Pressure is not what shapes the heart. Control is not what creates transformation.

The evidence is already there — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness.

The Spirit produces what no rule ever could.

Which makes me wonder…

What happens when we begin to put law above love?

When we start measuring faithfulness by attendance, compliance, or outward performance — especially in situations that do not violate a direct command of God?

Free will is one of the most profound ways God shows His love for us.

He gives us the dignity to choose.
He invites. He leads. He convicts through His Spirit.
But He does not coerce.

So when someone chooses to spend a Sunday or midweek celebrating a birthday with family instead of attending a church gathering…

When someone makes a personal decision without first seeking advice…

When someone chooses differently than we would — but is not choosing sin…

Why do we sometimes respond as if a command of God has been broken?

Why do we treat it as disobedience when God does not?

If the fruit of the Spirit is present in a person’s life — love, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness — Scripture says there is no law against that.

No rule should override what the Spirit is producing.

Because the goal of our faith was never control.

It has always been transformation through love.

Maybe the better question is not,
“Did they follow the rule?”

But rather,
“Do we see the fruit of the Spirit in their life?”

Because where the Spirit is at work, law becomes unnecessary.

And love becomes the evidence that God is truly leading.
